6 health benefits of vaping CBD

Benefits of vaping CBD

Cannabis has been used as a medicine for thousands of years, but only now are we beginning to understand the full potential of this remarkable plant. While most of the attention has gone on the psychoactive effects provided by tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD) is the compound which has been shown to have wide-ranging health benefits. And the best part about CBD is that it doesn’t get you “high”, is not addictive and the body can tolerate thousands of milligrams per day – not that you’ll ever need that much!

CBD can be applied to the skin, taken under the tongue in a tincture oil, eaten and consumed in a capsule. But one of the most popular wholesale CBD products is vape juice. Vaporizing has exploded as a healthier alternative to smoking, but in the context of CBD, this is also the quickest way of capitalizing on its therapeutic effects.

Here are six health benefits of vaping CBD.

Pain alleviation

Chronic pain conditions are notorious because they tend to be ever present, affecting mobility, sleep and all-round quality of life. Cannabis has been used for millennia as a natural pain reliever, but the jury has been out on the analgesic properties of CBD until recently. However, with studies indicating that CBD works inside and outside of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) to ease pain, and a survey showing that more people take CBD to soothe chronic pain than for any other ailment, it has become clear that it works. And by vaping CBD, pain can be dissolved on demand.

Manage depression

Depression is a serious mental health disorder that can cause a prolonged period of low mood and a loss of enjoyment in activities. Treating the condition is also a challenge, with prescription selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drugs proving ineffective for up to one-third of patients – that the mechanism in which they work is not fully understood does not help.

Thankfully, CBD can also help people to improve their mood and bust out of the blues. Once again, quite how CBD relieves depression is unclear, but it’s likely a combination of treating brain inflammation in areas such as the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex and addressing chemical imbalance.

Reduce anxiety

Anxiety brings about worst-case scenario thinking, general overthinking, nervousness and more – the result of which is a psychological paralysis which inhibits the sufferer from living life to the full. SSRIs are also the leading medication for anxiety, and are flawed for the same reasons they are for depression.

However, CBD works to restore chemical balance in the brain, suppressing the excitation which contributes to anxiety. As the condition causes acute symptoms, the most efficacious treatment is one that takes effect immediately – SSRIs fall flat here as the benefits can take a fortnight or more to show. In contrast, vaping CBD in situations which trigger anxiety ensures that symptoms stay under control.

Treat fibromyalgia symptoms

Many fibromyalgia patients have been left utterly frustrated with their illness. Researchers’ efforts to uncover why the condition causes a mishmash of symptoms, including cognitive impairment, pain and inflammation have proven largely fruitless. That was until the investigations of neurologist Dr Ethan Russo, who, over the past 15 years, has fleshed out the idea of endocannabinoid system dysfunction being the root cause of fibromyalgia – this has been described as Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CECD), with those afflicted by it not generating enough of the endocannabinoids needed for smooth ECS functioning.

The idea makes sense, with the ECS involved with the regulation of so many fibromyalgia symptoms. With ECS research not beginning until the 1990s, this also explains why previous attempts to underpin the cause of the condition have failed.

As CBD is an ECS regulator, taking it for fibromyalgia can yield great results. Vaping helps to quickly inhibit the breakdown of anandamide, a critical endocannabinoid that interacts with both of the main cannabinoid receptors.

Inflammatory conditions

Inflammation is usually tackled with aspirin or stronger anti-inflammatories. These are part of a class of drugs known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, or NSAIDs. While these drugs do effectively reduce inflammation, the side effects can be pretty nasty – for instance, they heighten the risk of stomach bleeding and ulcers. In 2018, a study was released showing that an aspirin a day provided no benefit in old age and may actually be bad for health.

CBD can also be used to calm inflammation, and ECS research indicates that the compound operates in a much more natural mechanism to NSAIDs. Anandamide and 2-AG are two endocannabinoids which regulate inflammation as CB2 receptor agonists. CBD doesn’t appear to affect 2-AG levels, but we know that it stops anandamide degradation, meaning that it facilitates more anandamide-CB2 interactions in the body. Interestingly, THC has also been found to treat inflammation as a CB2 receptor agonist.

CBD boosts memory and can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s

Without our memories, we lose a sense of our identity, which is why neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s are so painful for the patient, and their friends and family. In recent times, a connection has been unearthed between Alzheimer’s and a reduction in hippocampal mass – the hippocampus is the region of the brain where memories are created and stored.

CBD is an antioxidant, protecting against oxidative stress on the brain, but also a neuroprotectant and promoter of neurogenesis. Taking CBD vape oil wholesale stimulates growth in the hippocampus, which mitigates the risk of Alzheimer’s and can improve cognition in healthy people.

Studies also indicate that CBD is an antidote for cannabis-related memory and motivation loss, which seems to be caused by excessive consumption of THC, which is neurotoxic for the hippocampus.

Final thoughts

This is not an exhaustive list of the benefits offered by vaping CBD, but a taster of what’s possible with this non-psychotropic cannabis component. Research on CBD has picked up considerably in the 21st century, although endocannabinoid system science is a huge field and there’s still much more to discover. But as a safe substance, anyone can experiment with CBD for pretty much any ailment – although be wary about mixing CBD with prescription drugs, and especially steroids.
